Feel the passion of Easter in Granada and Seville

Tradition and emotion take over the Andalusian capitals and make their streets even more beautiful.
In this article we would like to share with you a guide to the essential processions that are well worth a visit to Granada and Seville.
Easter in Granada
Palm Sunday: ‘La Borriquilla’
Holy Week in Granada begins with one of the most beloved processions for the people of Granada, especially for children, the ‘Procesión de la Borriquilla’. It represents the Triumphal Entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, and what better way to admire it than in the Arco del Triunfo in Calle Elvira, carrying a beautiful carving of Christ by the Granadian sculptor Eduardo Espinosa surrounded by a procession of children with palms and olive branches.
Holy Wednesday: ‘Los Gitanos’
It passes through the Sacromonte neighbourhood between bonfires and saetas sung by the gypsies, with so much feeling that it is impossible not to be moved. Discover this unique passage of the Andalusian Holy Week.
Holy Thursday: ‘El Silencio’
It comes out at midnight and goes through the streets accompanied by the rhythm of the drums while those who are present keep a respectful silence that is broken from time to time by a heartfelt saeta from one of the balconies of the Carrera del Darro. And in the background, the unique setting of the Alhambra and the faint illumination of the candles. A breathtakingly beautiful atmosphere.
Processions in the Albaicín
Throughout Holy Week, several processions make part of their route through the emblematic neighbourhood of the Albaicín. La Aurora or La Estrella take place on Maundy Thursday. It is impressive to see the mastery with which the brotherhoods carry the floats through the narrow, steep white streets of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Easter in Seville
Seville, the most famous city at Easter. Find out why nobody wants to miss its processions.
Palm Sunday: ‘La Estrella’
Holy Week in Seville begins with the Hermandad de la Estrella, one of the most beloved brotherhoods in the Triana neighbourhood. Its procession, known as ‘La Valiente’, was the only one that dared to take part in Holy Week in 1932 in the midst of the Second Republic, thus earning itself a special place in history. Its two floats, Jesús de las Penas and María Santísima de la Estrella Coronada, cross the Triana Bridge on a route full of emotion and fervour, making it one of the most eagerly awaited processions of Palm Sunday.
Holy Wednesday: ‘La Sagrada Lanzada’
Following the narrative thread of Calvary, this procession tells us how Longinus, the Roman soldier, strikes a lance into the side of Jesus Christ in the presence of the Virgin de Guía, Saint John and the three Marys. The scene is spectacular due to the realism of the figures and the majesty of the soldier's horse.
Holy Friday: ‘El Cachorro’.
No other image of the Holy Week better represents the agony of Jesus Christ on the cross than that of the Cristo de la Expiración (Christ of the Expiration). The sculptor was inspired by the death of a gypsy called ‘El Cachorro’ which he witnessed. The procession departs from the Triana neighbourhood, which is well known for its religious fervour.
Holy Saturday: ‘La Soledad de San Lorenzo’
On the night of Holy Saturday, Seville is immersed in an atmosphere of meditation with the procession of the Soledad de San Lorenzo. This brotherhood, one of the oldest in the city, walks through the streets with its impressive float of the Virgen de la Soledad, an image of great beauty and expressiveness. The silence and sobriety of its penitential procession make it one of the most breathtaking processions, culminating in the Plaza de San Lorenzo, where the faithful bid farewell to Holy Week in Seville with devotion.
And this is just to begin with, Easter Week in Seville and Granada is much more: landscapes, skiing, museums... And what to say about the special gastronomy of these dates: fried ‘rosquillas’, ‘torrijas’, ‘leche frita’ (fried milk)…
